A wonderful heirloom ring.  This Art Deco ring is crafted in precious platinum.  It features a genuine 4.90ct Star Sapphire and is accented with .50ctw of Old European cut diamonds.

The style is classic.  Sometimes referred to as a "Gypsy" style ring, when the ring has a bezel set center stone, and the ring profile is rounded like this.   These never go out of style.  Perfect to pass down to your son, or grandson.

The center stone is a natural cabochon cut Star Sapphire, measuring 10mm round and weighing 4.90ct.  The color is blue-gray, with a modern star effect in natural light.  Its origin is Ceylon (modern day Sri Lanka), which is famous for sapphires.   Notice the sapphire is not faceted but domed on top.  The bottom is flat.

In natural daylight, the sapphire exhibits a white-ish "star".  This is caused by a natural phenomenon called asterism.  Asterism happens when a sapphire (or another gemstone) contains inclusions of small needle-like crystals, typically of the miner rutile, arranged in a pattern.  These rutile inclusions are aligned in a way that when light hits the surface of the stone, it reflects off these inclusions and creates a star-shaped pattern.  Pretty darn cool, right?

The color is a soft blueish-gray.  If the color were more intense blue, the price of the sapphire could easily be 5X more!

On either side of the center, there are four (4) Old European cut diamonds.  These are between .12ct - .13ct each, for a total estimated weight of .50ctw.  They are set in an elongated shield-shaped recessed area.  Take a close look at the sides of the ring so you can see this.  It is a distinctive look!

The ring is a size 9.25.  But fits looser because, underneath the sapphire, the ring is open.  So, the top part of your finger isn't compressed by metal.  If you usually wear a size 10 - this ring will probably fit just fine.

Based on the classic Art Deco style and the way the diamonds were cut, we estimate this ring was made in the mid 1930s to possibly the mid 1940s.  We polished out the scratches, and applied a new satin finish.  And it looks gorgeous!

Don't sleep on this ring.  You'll never see another one like it.  Its such a quality piece that you'll love.  And we recommend passing this one down to someone you love.
