Zirconium is an interesting material. When it's pulled out of the earth, it is a darkish gray color. But when heated very hot, the outer part of the metal oxidizes to a lightish black color. It is not a plating, it's permanent, much like a porcelein shell. This black oxidized layer is also hardened, so it becomes scratch resistant. Not scratch proof, but it does hold up pretty well.
The oxidization can be reapplied if the ring gets marred for a small service fee.
