You'll love these handmade yellow gold star sapphire earrings! They are unique and beautiful. Each earring is set with a genuine natural star sapphire. The mountings are hand-fabricated in 14K gold with an Etruscan-inspired design.
The light purple star sapphires are cabochon cut, meaning they are domed on top, not faceted. They are "star" sapphires, which means that in natural daylight, they display a whiteish 'star'. This is caused by a natural phenomenon called asterism. Asterism happens when a sapphire (or another gemstone) contains inclusions of small needle-like crystals, typically of the mineral rutile, arranged in a pattern. These rutile inclusions are aligned so that when light hits the stone's surface, it reflects off these inclusions and creates a star-shaped pattern.
We based the design on an ancient style of drop earring that began in the Etruscan time period - pre-Roman era! (2000 - 2500 years ago!) Gemstones were set in a bezel, not prongs, generally. The gold was often not highly polished, and granulation was used in the design (those little gold balls at the bottom.)
