This handmade 14K yellow gold ring features a minimalist design with a lovely purple star sapphire. Perfect for stacking with bands.
A thin band, measuring 2mm wide, holds a 5mm natural star sapphire that is purple. Purple star sapphires are not seen as often as the standard blue-gray color. This is natural color, and a mined sapphire, not a lab grown variety.
Star sapphires have been coveted for centuries. Why? Because they display a fascinating whiteish ‘star’ in natural daylight. This is caused by a natural phenomenon called asterism. Asterism happens when a sapphire (or another gemstone) contains inclusions of tiny needle-like crystals, typically of the mineral rutile, arranged in a pattern. These rutile inclusions are aligned so that when light hits the stone's surface, it reflects off these inclusions and creates a star-shaped pattern.
