A recent trend is for out of town companies, calling themselves names that sound like the traveling road show (a television show that appraises items, but does not buy) and similar names, to come into towns and set up in hotels. These companies advertise heavily and create such excitement that many people show up with their treasures. however, they typically only pay about 25-35% of what the wholesale value of your items are worth. They are only in town a couple days and their goal is to make as much money as possible by paying you as little as possible. These people aren't concerned with building good solid business relationships with you by paying you fairly what your items are worth. These operations get the goods cheap and get out of Dodge!
For a couple of years the Modesto Police Dept did all they could to keep these carpetbaggers out of Modesto. but eventually the companies attorneys found loopholes by setting up outside the city limits, therefore, outside of the MPD jurisdiction.
