About Tourmaline Tourmaline is one of the most colorful gemstones in the world. It is found in nearly every color of the rainbow. Most popular are shades of green, pink, red, peach and light blue.
It receives its name from the Sinhalese word "tormomalli", which means mixed gems. (Sinhalese is a language spoken in Sri Lanka, an island rich in precious gems.)
Tourmaline is found around the world. Most tourmaline used in fine jewelry was mined in Brazil. However, other locations are Afghanistan, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russia, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, the United States and Zambia.
One of our favorite characteristics of tourmaline is that a single piece can have a range of colors. For example,
watermelon tourmaline will exhibit greens and pinks. They are so beautiful!
Tourmaline is fairly durable for jewelry. On the Moh's Hardness Scale it is between 7.0 - 7.5. However, it can scratch, so if it is being worn in a ring, please do be very careful with it to preserve its beauty.
